15 - TIS Congress 2017 & Pavement LCA 2017

Hello crew!

How are you doing?
I hope you had a wonderful Easter break with your family and friends.

Today, I have great news for you. I am just back from Italy where I spent my Easter break with my girlfriend and my relatives and attended my first International Conference on behalf of TRUSS ITN.
The event was the 1st International Congress on Transport Infrastructures & Systems (TIS) 2017 organized in Rome (Italy) by the AIIT (Italian Association of Transport Engineers) in collaboration with many public and private international sponsors.
It was great, and it was attended by experts from all over the world. For me, it was the opportunity for introducing the initial findings of my study, receiving their comments and suggestions about the current work and future development of the project.
I presented my work related to road asset management in the Session 17 of the congress. The title of the work presented in Rome is: “A big data approach to assess the influence of road pavement conditions on truck fleet fuel consumption”. Here, you can find details: http://tisroma.aiit.it/

In the meantime, on the other side of the world, another paper of mine was presented by my colleague Laura Trupia. This paper was focused more on the impact of roughness and macrotexture on the Life-Cycle Assessment (LCA) of road pavements. The conference in this case was the Pavement Life-Cycle Assessment Symposium in Illinois, and the title of the paper presented is “Route level analysis of road pavement surface condition and truck fleet fuel consumption”. Here you can find details: http://lcasymposium.ict.illinois.edu/

These two works represents a very good base for the future of y research. In fact, in the first paper (presented in Rome) I show how the ‘Big Data’ approach is actually able to bring to similar conclusions compared to previous studies. In the second one instead, me and Laura highlight how the impact of the road surface conditions is significant in LCA of road pavements in both terms of costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
Results shown in the papers gives us more confidence in the adopted methodology and in the future success of the project.

In the past few months an initial case study gave us the possibility to test the impact of the vehicle weight on the truck fleet fuel economy, and the applicability of Machine Learning regression techniques in the data analysis. First results show a significant improvement in the performance of the generated model thanks to the new used advanced statistics.
At the moment, a new phase of data collection is on-going. This will allow us to extend the conclusions of the study performed to a wider range of vehicles, including a wider range of vehicle speeds, road and weather conditions, etc.
A new conference paper has been accepted for the ESREL 2017 in Slovenia, and two journal paper are going to be drafted soon. Apparently, the hard work of the past months is paying off.

As usual, if you’d like to receive updates and information about my research project: just stay tuned. Much more news are to be released soon.

Cheers,

FP13
